Similar to the very recent grass event and rock event, trainers will encounter increased numbers of Fire and Ice Pokémon, with the likes of Charmander, Cyndaquil and Lapras cited, as well as ways for players to boost their XP gains. Note that we’ve excluded Ice / Flying type Delibird from the above list, since it has yet to appear in the game at all. Don’t expect to see it, unless Niantic decides this event is the perfect time for it to make a debut. While ice is reasonably common, fire is certainly more elusive, so it’s a good time to catch and evolve any remaining creatures you need. Starter creatures Charmander, Cyndaquil, Houndour, Vulpix and their evolutions are uncommon, while it might also be a good chance to find the particularly rare Pokémon Lapras. Hopefully they don’t get drowned out by the likes of Swinub, Sneasal and other commons. How will these creatures appear? Other events such as the Water Festival and Grass Event saw increased appearance rates of themed creatures everywhere, not just in their natural biomes, and it’s likely to the same here. This means rarer creatures will appear outside of their usual spawn locations, meaning anyone could find an Lapras before too long. This is compared to Chansey during the recent Valentine’s Day event, which only increased its chances of appearing in its usual habitat, going from being incredibly elusive to super rare. As well as these rarer creatures, the event is also a great chance to get Candy for some of the more uncommon creatures if you haven’t evolved and added them to your Pokedex already; getting those starters evolved might be a good thing to focus on, for example. The Season of Mythical Wishes continues with the Winter Holiday event, which has brought Mega Glalie to Pokémon Go. Don’t forget to partake in the new Go Battle League season. Elsewhere, be sure to use Daily Adventure Incense for the chance of encountering Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos and Galarian Moltres.
- Increased XP for special throws and hatching eggs Catching creatures with special types of throws - including Curveballs, Nice Throws, Great Throws and Excellent Throws - as well as hatching eggs will give you “increased XP” for the duration of the event. In short, all special throws have a 3x XP modifier, while egg hatches have a 5x XP modifier. For example, if you have a Pokemon Go Plus, then every successful catch (classed as a first attempt) will give you 450XP, three times the standard 150XP. It’s worth nothing there are no additional increases for catching Pokémon, evolving Pokémon, or Pokémon running away. - New gym mechanics are on the way. Developer Niantic has said it will be “temporarily disabling Gyms for a short period of time” to prepare for an update “focused on collaborative group gameplay” shortly after the event concludes. Whether this means Gyms will be unavailable during the event or after isn’t fully clear, but we can expect changes to be made sometime in June. It’s been separately confirmed legendary Pokémon are finally coming this summer - and it wouldn’t surprise us if they’re part and parcel of the same update. Not long to wait now! And while not strictly part of the Fire and Ice event, developer Niantic also announced the first real-life meetups and events in cities across the world. That’s your lot. It should be noted the recent Water Festival stealth introduced the concept of Shinies, including a Shiny Magikarp and Red Gyarados. It’s unknown whether another such update will be introduced (or even more Shinies) but as usual, it doesn’t hurt to keep your eyes peeled for anything suspect.
